In Circles was composed for Ensemble Five. It has a somewhat meditative quality, from the flowing cycles of the theme to the circular weaving of musical material between the five cellos. As a listener, you are encouraged to move around during the performance and experience different perspectives, from far away to absorbing the music whilst sitting in the centre of the ensemble. Due to the unique setup of the ensemble, the piece becomes an experience in time and space alike.
ENSEMBLE FIVE
Ensemble FIVE was an initiative of fellow composer Kieran Klaassen and myself. We coupled ten composers with five cellists to create a concert filled with new music in a marvellous environment, designed by the Dutch stage designer, Ilona Overweg.
